Minimal Intervention Dentistry
At ahm, we are committed to supporting our patients' ongoing good health. One of the ways we are trying to achieve this is through the development and implementation of strategies to minimise and prevent dental disease. Our dental practices use a new approach to dental care known as Minimal Intervention Dentistry (MI).
What is MI?
MI aims to identify and manage the risk factors for developing tooth decay. The emphasis is early intervention to identify dental disease before it develops and as necessary, use non-surgical means to control the early stages of the disease. We know that risk of dental decay is greatly influenced by diet, medications, saliva and fluoride. We also know that if detected early, decay can be cured through proper management.
How does it work
The MI approach to dental care is similar to what happens when you visit a doctor for a medical examination. The dentist starts by conducting a full check of your dental health and risk factors. They will examine:
- Your diet
- Your exposure to fluoride
- The amount and consistency of your saliva
- Your plaque control
- Any medical history that may impact on your dental health
- Any stress or changes in your life
- Existing dental problems
- Your attitudes to oral health
They may also conduct some simple tests on a sample of your saliva. The sample allows your dentist to see a number of important things like acidity, ability to neutralise mouth acids and how much harmful bacteria is present in your mouth. The dentist will then work with you to provide a personalised treatment plan to prevent any existing dental decay from progressing.
The ahm Dental Practices began a trial of MI in March 2004 to determine whether this new approach to dental health is cost effective and efficient to introduce on a wider scale. The trial ended in February 2005, and was so succesful that this method has been adopted into all three ahm Dental Practices for full time use.
