Essential Hospital & Essential Hospital Level 5


Essential Hospital includes hospital accommodation and ambulance fees and comes with or without a co-payment. More on how the co-payment works.

It's suitable for singles, couples and families who don’t need cover for pregnancy, hip or knee replacements.

What am I covered for?

Essential Hospital and Essential Hospital Level 5 include the following:

  • Hospital accommodation — private or shared room at most private and all public hospitals in Australia*
  • Operating Theatre*
  • Major Eye Surgery
  • Psychiatric Services
  • Rehabilitation
  • Coronary Care
  • Intensive Care
  • No Gap prostheses and the minimum benefit for Gap Permitted prosthesesa
  • Ambulance transport
  • Disease prevention, chronic disease management and hospital substitute programs
  • Doctor health checks and Healthy Heart checks

Restricted Services

With Essential Hospital and Essential Hospital Level 5 you receive a restricted benefit for some services as follows:

  • Hip and Knee Joint Replacements
  • Pregnancy related services (obstetrics)
  • Assisted reproductive services such as IVF and GIFT Programs
  • Services not covered by Medicare

Restricted services attract a default benefit which is determined by the Federal Government.
